Water Hyacinth at UC Davis
by Danny Klittich
Water hyacinth is a popular ornamental pond plant that has established as an invasive weed in the Sacramento Delta. It can build up in very dense patches effectively dominating the ecosystem and out competing animals and other plants for resources. We have several projects working on control of this invasive weed at UC Davis and here is a great picture showing off the beautiful flowers and an experiment looking at the effects of farm run off on water hyacinth characteristics. This particular project is part of the Nansen Lab (http://chrnansen.wix.com/nansen2), with whom we share greenhouse space.
